About Me
I represent North Carolina local governments on their full range of public finance projects. I’ve worked as a bond lawyer ever since I graduated from law school way back in 1986.
I’ve been in the business long enough to have some ideas on how to handle whatever your particular issues might be. I take pride in some of my long-term relationships with clients, but I still think I do some of my best work with local government officials who aren’t as familiar with the borrowing process. That’s one reason I’ve been invited by the School of Government and the NCGFOA to present to new finance officers and on the basics of the borrowing process. I’ve been around long enough to have good working relationships with the bankers, LGC personnel, USDA personnel and other market participants.
I've represented cities, counties, towns and other local governments throughout North Carolina, and served for over ten years as primary outside counsel to the Governmental Finance group of BB&T on its North Carolina local government financings. I speak at events sponsored by the North Carolina School of Government and the North Carolina Government Finance Officers’ Association, particularly on matters of interest to new finance officers or to finance officers for units that are infrequent borrowers. I've also worked on a wide variety of innovative economic development projects that involve local government financial transactions, including working on agreements for establishing several multi-jurisdictional industrial parks.
I’m proud to be a lawyer, but I appreciate being told that I’m “not stuffy like those other bond lawyers.” I’m a low-key guy who remembers that it’s the clients, and the client’s work, that is most important.
I live in Chapel Hill with my wife and however many of our four children happen to be home at the time. I root for the Tar Heels, Yankees and Manchester United.
