Sanford Holshouser LLP Announces New Board Effectiveness Training

Bob Jessup

Training sessions can be overwhelming for everyone--whether you’re organizing the session or attending it. Outside trainings can be costly and it can be difficult to accommodate your staff’s busy schedule. Budgeting issues may force you to choose training that isn’t comprehensive. Or, you might find yourself paying extra for unwanted services. In-house trainings done by staff can detract from your staff’s regular duties, creating a backlog of work.

We’re here to make it easier for you.

Sanford Holshouser LLP is pleased to announce it is now offering a variety of training courses for your local government and nonprofit needs.

Our team of experienced local government and nonprofit attorneys will provide your boards with focused, practical training that will establish a framework, complete with strategies and tools to create a more effective environment.  We offer in-person interactive, multi-dimensional trainings rooted in public service values. We use real world examples and exercises to help participants build habits and skills to improve overall board dynamics, productivity, and community engagement. Our goal is to bring increased effectiveness and legal compliance to your board or organization.

To that end, we’re available to tailor the trainings and meet with separate groups or individuals in order to make your training both as useful and cost-efficient as possible.

What we can do for you:

·       Flexible Venues. We work throughout the state and we’re happy to come to you.

·       Flexible Schedules. We’ll work with your schedule to find a time that accommodates your needs.

·       Flexible Topics. We’ll modify trainings to include topics that meet your board’s specific needs.

·       Flexible Pricing. We’ll adjust the price depending on the size of your audience and the number of topics you’d like covered.

Local Governments:

Special programs are available for elected officials and other targeted groups. Local governments may also work together to offer a multi-jurisdictional program.

o   Topics include: Ethical standards, conflicts of interest, collaboration with other elected boards, board effectiveness, legal compliance, misappropriation of confidential information, quasi judicial hearings, open meeting laws, public records, media policies, strategies for effective community engagement, and more!

o   Our training can satisfy the 2 hours of training required by North Carolina law.

·       Appointed Boards:

Whether you’re looking for general training for all of your citizen boards or training tailored to a specific board--we’ve got you covered.

o   Topics include: Board effectiveness, review of ethics policies and procedures, statutory requirements for economic development incentives, review of ethics policies and board procedures, quasi judicial hearings for planning boards and boards of adjustment, ethical standards, conflicts of interest, review of policies and procedures for an economic development board’s grant and incentive programs, misappropriation of confidential information, strategies for effective community engagement, open meeting laws, public records, media policies, and more!

Non-Profits:

·       Topics include: Board governance, collaboration, diversity and inclusion, financial management, leadership, social media policies, legal compliance, board effectiveness, strategy for nonprofits, conflict of interests, open meetings laws, ethical standards, strategies for effective community engagement and more!

Community Conversations:

Community conversations help engage the entire community in a larger vision, can heal a community, or sometimes just re-energize a community that has lost its momentum. These conversations are aimed at enhancing understanding within the community and improving broad community participation in government or community planning and decision making. They are collaborative, respectful, constructive, and results-focused. We provide a safe space for a community to come together for structured dialogue about common values--past, present, and future.

·       Topics include: Impartial outreach to the community, structuring conversation around shared values and goals, facilitating conversation that may be highly politicize, establishing opportunities for continued discussion and cooperation, and more!
